WESTERN NEW YORK ROSE SOCIETY
Lillian Stiegler, President
The roots of our organization go back to the late 1930’s when amateur rose growers in our area joined together to form the Niagara Frontier Rose Society. They were followed over the years by the Greater Buffalo Rose Society, the Niagara County Rose Society and the Greater Amherst Rose Society The years took their toll and in 1990 forced the consolidation of the societies and the formation of the Western New York Rose Society.
Today we are an organization that is affiliated with the American Rose Society and the New York District of the ARS, the American Rose Society. We presently have a membership in excess of 100 avid rose growers and meet monthly at the St. Stephen-Bethlehem United Church of Christ, located at 750 Wehrle Dr. at Churchcroft (one block west of Union Rd., Rte. 277), Amherst, NY 14225. We host rose shows annually. In the fall of 2003 we were the Host Society for the NY District Convention, and are looking forward to hosting it again when it is our turn next. At each of our meetings, at least 2 programs are presented; one devoted exclusively to timely rose culture and the second one to ‘rosey’ topics. We also foster an interest in floral arranging among our members. Annually, we also host growing seminars at local nurseries and maintain a display at the Erie County Fair. We also man a booth at the New York State Fair in Syracuse for a day each August.
